  • Forecast assumes points keep being awarded: about 12,500 dollars per month (the all-time average of 12 months) continue to be awarded, while 5.2% of the available balance is redeemed each month. When awards outpace redemptions the unspent balance builds up rather than running to zero.
  • Both breakage figures are the unspent balance as a share of points awarded to date: present breakage uses today's balance, projected breakage uses the balance forecast 12 months out. Projected above present means the liability is still accumulating.
  • An estimate from history, not accounting advice. How it is used in your accounts is for your accountant or auditor.

01/The maths

Four figures, worked out in the open.

Every number the calculator shows comes from these, run over the history you give it.

Outstanding liability

(points awarded − points redeemed) ÷ points per dollar

What the unspent balance is worth today if every point were redeemed.

Present breakage

unspent points ÷ points awarded to date

The share of everything ever awarded that is still unspent right now.

Monthly redemption rate

redeemed ÷ (opening balance + awarded), averaged

How much of the points available each month members actually spend.

Projected liability

balance + awards − rate × (balance + awards), monthly

The balance rolled forward with new awards still arriving, so it does not simply drain to zero.

02/Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate points liability?

Take every point awarded, subtract every point redeemed, expired or adjusted, and convert what is left to dollars at your points-to-dollar ratio. That is the outstanding liability today. The calculator does this exactly, then forecasts it forward from your own award and redemption history.

How is breakage calculated here?

Present breakage is the unspent balance as a share of all points awarded to date. Projected breakage is the same ratio using the balance forecast at the end of the horizon, so the two can be compared directly. Projected above present means the liability is still building.

What data do I need?

For a quick estimate, five totals: points awarded and redeemed to date, the same two for the last twelve months, and your points-per-dollar ratio. For a forecast from your history, any CSV or Excel export with one row per transaction, a date and a number of points.

Is my ledger uploaded?

No. The file is read and calculated in your browser tab. Nothing about its contents is sent anywhere, and closing the tab discards it.

Is this the same forecast as DashVault’s?

Yes. The calculator runs the same function as the Liability Forecast report in DashVault. In the product it runs on your live program data and refreshes on its own. How the forecast works.

Is this accounting advice?

No. It is a transparent, repeatable estimate from history, with the method spelled out. How it is used in your accounts is a judgement for your accountant or auditor.
